Journal of American History

Cover JahThe Journal of American History is the premiere publication of the OAH and the leading scholarly publication in American history. In continuous publication since 1907, it is the journal of record in the field. The Journal is published four times a year.

OAH Magazine of History

Cover OahEstablished in 1985, the quarterly Magazine of History focuses in each issue on a theme or topic of recent scholarship in American history and provides readers with informative articles, teaching strategies, and current historiography.

OAH Outlook

Cover OahOAH Outlook: A Membership Newsletter of the Organization of American Historians, provides news of the organization and the history profession, as well as timely articles of professional and scholarly interest to OAH members. OAH Outlook appears quarterly each February, May, August, and November, and is an exclusive benefit of membership in the OAH.

The OAH Distinguished Lectureship Program

Created in 1981 by the OAH president Gerda Lerner, the OAH Distinguished Lectureship Program features more than 400 historians who have made major contributions to the study of American history.

Icon NPSThe OAH/National Park Service Collaboration

For more than fifteen years, the OAH has collaborated with the National Park Service (NPS) on a variety of historical projects, including original research, historiographical overviews, scholarly consultation, professional development seminars, and the creation of teaching materials. Over forty collaborative projects are currently in process, and the OAH will soon enter another five-year commitment with the NPS.

In accordance with our mission, the OAH offers a variety of teaching resources geared toward secondary and postsecondary learners.

The Organization of American Historians promotes excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and presentation of American history, and encourages wide discussion of historical questions and equitable treatment of all practitioners of history.

Dr. Miller Leads Fundraising Efforts

Dr. Linda Karen Miller, 1996 OAH Tachau Teacher of the Year recipient, led fundraising efforts in Las Vegas, Nevada to build a statue dedicated to Helen J. Stewart, often called the “first lady of Las Vegas.” For the past four years Miller has been appearing as Helen J. Stewart in character and costume at various civic groups around town. Read more >

January OAH Magazine of History Focuses on Black Freedom Struggle Outside the South

The theme for the January 2012 issue of the OAH Magazine of History is Beyond Dixie: The Black Freedom Struggle Outside of the South. It features an all-star lineup of scholars whose work continues to transform our understanding of this subject. They include consulting editor and contributor Patrick Jones, Thomas Sugrue, Jeanne Theoharis, Lisa Levenstein, Donna Murch, Craig Werner, Trevor Griffey, and Hasan Kwame Jeffries. The issue also includes interviews with Fannie Rushing on her activism with Chicago Area Friends of SNCC, and with José “Cha Cha” Jiménez on his involvement in the Young Lords and the fight for Puerto Rican liberation in the Windy City. JFK Library Releases Final Recordings

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum announced that it has declassified and made available the final 45 hours of White House recordings that were secretly taped during President John F. Kennedy’s time in office. Read more >

Nixon Grand Jury Records Now Online

In May 1975, the Watergate Special Prosecution team found it necessary to question former President Richard M. Nixon in connection with various ongoing investigations at the time. The following month, Nixon was questioned by and his testimony was given to the third Watergate Grand Jury. Through the efforts of the Public Citizen Litigation Group, on behalf of the OAH and others, these records are now online. Read more >
